The 2016 grassland and arable farming season is gradually coming to a close in the northern hemisphere. There is still quite a lot to do out there over the next few weeks, but most machines have now completed their work for this year. By storing your machinery carefully over winter, you not only extend the service life of your implements; you also avoid any unpleasant surprises at the start of the next season. A clean machine is much easier to check for damage and wear so that there is nothing to stop it starting up first time next year.

We divide winter storage preparations into three steps: 

• Cleaning, 
• Checking, and if required; repair 
• Corrosion protection

Cleaning

Both of the classic cleaning tools are used here. The toughest dirt is best removed using a pressure washer. Don't use too high a pressure - it's best to let the water soften up the dirt first.  

Note that some components such as electronics, bearings and hydraulics are sensitive to wet and need to be avoided or covered up. These components are best cleaned using compressed air. Plan in sufficient time for the machine to dry, and then start it up to idle briefly.

Checking (and repairing, if required)

You can also ask your PÖTTINGER dealership for an appointment for a machine check. Check the oil levels and familiarise yourself with the instruction manual of the machine so that you don't miss key maintenance intervals, such as oil changes.

Corrosion protection and parking

Before putting the machine into winter storage, the paint and any exposed metal surfaces must be protected against corrosion. There are various products for this, such as multi-function oils, plant oils and waxes. Make sure that hydraulic piping, plastic surfaces and tyres do not come into contact with oil. 

Carefully apply grease to all the greasing points to force water and dirt out of the bearings and prevent moisture from entering over the winter.

Check the air pressure in the tyres and increase the pressure before stowing the machine for winter storage. Alternatively, you can park the machine on trestles to avoid the risk of flat spots forming on the tyres.

It is best to disconnect electronic control terminals and store them in a dry place protected against frost.
